G.R.E.A.T. Projects in Puerto Rico

Photographs used with permission.

The first G.R.E.A.T. Officer Training conducted outside of the United States was held in Puerto Rico in August 2007. However, Officer José Diaz has been teaching the Program there since 2002. As a dedicated G.R.E.A.T. instructor, he has attended several G.R.E.A.T. conferences in order to improve his G.R.E.A.T. teaching skills.

This year was very exciting because the 105 middle school students not only came up with innovative ways to improve their community—they took action and actually made a difference! The students:

Painted the walls of their lunchroom.

Cleaned community restrooms.

Planted trees and flowers.

Cleaned up the entire school.

Amazingly, the San Juan Municipal Police were successful this year without the G.R.E.A.T. funds they had relied on in the past. Officer Diaz, Officer Elizabeth Pacheco, and Officer Juan Rentas Maldonado are committed to the youth of San Juan, Puerto Rico. They go the extra mile to send the message that they do not tolerate gangs in their community. The officers also admitted that they could not have been as successful without the help of Ms. Milagros Alicea, who assisted with the seventh graders’ projects.
