U.S. Marshal Partners With G.R.E.A.T.
The U.S. Marshals Service in the Northern District of Ohio has joined the G.R.E.A.T.
partnership to prevent youth crime, violence, and gang involvement while developing
a positive relationship among law enforcement, families, and our young people to
create safer communities. As a former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
agent, U.S. Marshal Peter J. Elliott was
knowledgeable of the G.R.E.A.T. Program and supported these efforts by affording
Deputy U.S. Marshal Miranda Holloway the opportunity to become certified to teach
the G.R.E.A.T. curriculum. On May 6, 2005, the Cleveland Federal Executive Board
recognized Deputy Holloway at the 2005 Wings of Excellence Recognition and Awards
Program. The program guide noted: "Deputy U.S. Marshal Miranda Holloway is a shining
representative of the Marshals Service for her positive attitude and tremendous
work effort. In addition to her regular duties, Deputy Holloway volunteered to become
certified as a Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) instructor. G.R.E.A.T.
is a partnership created to prevent youth crime, violence, and gang involvement
while developing a positive relationship among law enforcement, families, and our
young people. Deputy Holloway teaches students a life skills competency program
designed to provide the students with the skills they need to avoid gang pressure
and youth violence. Deputy Holloway has taught this program for the past two years
in the Cleveland Public School District. Her initiative and dedication to forging
a positive relationship between children and law enforcement officers is to be commended."
Deputy Holloway is the only U.S. Marshal in the country currently certified to teach
G.R.E.A.T., but the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the G.R.E.A.T. Program are
working in cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Service to get additional deputy marshals
certified. Additional photographs of Deputy Holloway and the students at Whitney
Young Middle School can be viewed at the district's Web site at http://www.usmarshals.gov/district/oh-n/news/chron/2004/072804.htm.
