"No Violence is G.R.E.A.T." Sheriff’s Summer Program
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.)
Unit is conducting its first series of summer camps in cooperation with local youth
organizations.
The second of three one-week programs is currently underway at Diamond in the Pines,
a Brookhaven Town Park in Coram.
Through a series of fun-filled activities designed to build team spirit and foster
conflict resolution techniques, the campers (approximately 40-50 children per week)
develop tools to aid them in overcoming temptations and obstacles facing our youth
today.
The summer program is designed to build on the school based curriculum taught by
Deputy Sheriffs and Correction Officers. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “This
program gives students an opportunity to enhance social skills, giving them an alternative
to gang involvement, and adds structure to the summer months”.
Photo and video opportunities are available through Friday, August 8th. Camp hours
are 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Scheduled activities are:
Thursday, 8/7 – K-9 Demonstration and Army National Guard
Friday, 8/8 – Smoke House Demonstration and 11:00 a.m. Graduation.
