Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts
Orange County Sheriff's Office, Orlando, Florida, has targeted the Waveland Police
Department, Mississippi, for providing Hurricane Katrina relief and support. Several
Orange County Sheriff's Office G.R.E.A.T. deputies have been busy with their G.R.E.A.T.
students, working to help with the hurricane relief efforts.
G.R.E.A.T. Deputies Susan Soto and Derek Drudge held dances at their respective
Conway and Hunter's Creek Middle Schools. Derek provided free DJ services at both
dances. Their G.R.E.A.T. students donated sodas and snacks to be sold at the dance.
All concession and ticket sales went towards the relief efforts, with a resulting
donated combined total of over $5,000. G.R.E.A.T. Deputies Kyle Peterson, Jon Suarez,
Edd Gordon, Meagan Richardson, and Jim Verity were present donating security and
spent time interacting with the kids and their parents. Administrators and staff
from both middle schools are also recognized for taking the time to provide the
location for the dances, in addition to helping organize this event to make it a
success.
Additionally, G.R.E.A.T. students from Deputies Mike Shambaugh's and Jim Verity's
respective Lockhart and Arbor Ridge Middle Schools donated numerous large boxes
filled with toiletries (razors, shave cream, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, brushes,
etc.) for the Waveland Police Deptartment relief effort.
